Knowledge and attitude towards suicide among nurses in national referral hospital, Bhutan
Abstract:
Nurses are the major workforce in health care delivery system. The care of suicidal patients has become challenging with the increasing number of suicidal cases in Bhutan in recent years. This descriptive correlational study aimed to explore the relationship between knowledge and attitude towards patients suicidal behaviors among nurses in Bhutan. Two hundred sixteen nurses working in various units and departments of a referral hospital in Thimphu district in Bhutan, participated in this study. Research instruments included demographic record form and questionnaires knowledge and attitude towards suicide behaviors. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Point-biserial and Pearsons product moment correlational coefficient. The results revealed that nurses had moderate level of knowledge about suicide and attitude towards patients suicidal behavior. Nurses age, level of education, years of nursing experiences, and history of attempted suicide or contemplated suicide were significantly associated with knowledge about suicide. Nurses gender, years of nursing experiences, past caring experience, and previous training and education were significantly associated with attitude towards patients presenting suicidal behavior. There was a significant positive correlation between nurses knowledge and attitude towards suicide behaviors (r = .25, p < .01). This finding could be used as baseline data for training nurses in to caring for patients with suicide behaviors.
