Abstract: Out-of-class learning activities provide students with plentiful opportunities to participate in English language learning. Moreover, they provide the students opportunities to become exposed to meaningful language usage in realistic situations which potentially help them become successful language learners and also strengthen their learning autonomy. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate out-of-class English learning activities of tertiary students at Mae Fah Luang University and to investigate their opinions toward doing out-of-class English learning activities and the factors affecting their choices in doing those activities. A questionnaire survey and a semi-structured interview were employed in this study. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically by using mean scores and standard deviations. Results from the interviews were content analyzed. The findings revealed that the five out-of-class English learning activities which were most popular among the participants were listening to English songs, surfing the internet, watching English language YouTube videos, translating English text into Thai, and watching English movies. The participants also reported doing receptive skill activities more than productive skill activities. Some activities were perceived as leisure activities, whereas others were intentionally carried out to improve their English. However, the students’ reported perceptions about engaging in out-of-class English learning activities were varied in terms of purposes and goals of such participation. In addition, motivation and learning environment were two main factors which may have affected the students in doing out-of-class English learning activities. Finally, the results revealed that their language development was put as a first priority when participants determined the benefits of out-of-class English learning activities, which could lead them to be autonomous learners.
