Abstract: microorganis~n In the form of granules. The aim of this thesis was to study the effect of upflowvelocity on anaerobic granulation in UASB reactor treating proteinaceous wastewater using sludgefrom anaerobic pond as seed. Two upflow velocities, 0.25-mkr and 0.5-m/hr were chosen for thisstudy. Synthetic wastewater of 5000 mg/lCOD which was generated from soybean powder was fedinto an acidogenic reactor and sedimentation tank before feeding into UASB reactors. The twoidentical bench-scale UASB reactors with 4 liters of liquid volume, 5.4 cm in diameter and 1.2 mhigh were used for each upflow velocity. Both reactors were controlled at 24 hrsHRT. The solublcinfluent COD of both UASB reactors was about 1280 mg/L COD. Thc reactors were investigatedunder room temperature for 25 1 days. The results showed that both reactors could remove the CODover 90 percent. The granules were initially observed on 107 and 76 days of operation for 0.25-m/hrand 0.5-m,hr rcactors. respectively. The average SMA (Specific Methanogenic Activity) and _cdensity of granules of the 0.25 -m/hr UASB reactor were 0.30 gCOD / gVSS and 1.003 g/ml whilethose of the 0.5-mlhr UASB reactors were 0.37 gCOD / gVSS and 1.015 g/ml. For the 0.25-m/hrand 0.5-mkr UASB reactors, 54 and 68 percent of granular biomass had their size between 0.426and 4.75 mm in diameter, respectively. Considering setting velocity, most of granules had theirsettling velocities in a range of 32-128 m/hr and 38-143 m/hr for the 0.25-m/hr and 0.5-m/hr UASBreactors. respectively.
