Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among public debt, private
debt and GDP growth of Myanmar. The methodology using in this study is based on
time-series regression analysis in which Johansen co-integration and a VEC model is
estimated. Then the dynamic interactions are studied with Granger causality tests. The
annual data set of total debt, which is the sum of public debt and private debt, and also
the data of GDP growth rate of Myanmar during 1976 to 2015 are employed in this
research. The empirical results show that the private debt has no significantly effect to
growth rate of GDP. However, the public debt has significantly effect to GDP growth.
There is a negative relationship between the public debt and GDP growth in a long-run
and positive in a short-run. Moreover, the public debt and GDP growth have the
causality. The results of this study imply that GDP growth of Myanmar requires public
debt reduction. In other words, GDP growth is difficult to achieve when public debt is
increased.
