Home school instructors' beliefs and practices of arts integration in promoting young learners' motivation in English language learning
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the beliefs and practices of home school instructors, and the motivations of young home-schooled learners on arts integration in English language instruction. This study used a mixed-method research design to collect data including two research instruments: a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. There were 43 participants among instructors and 6 participants among learners, all involved in home schooling in the north of Thailand. The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics to present the beliefs of instructors about integrating arts in English instruction relating to three issues: the importance of arts, support of using arts, and self-efficacy of using arts. Besides the quantitative results, framework analysis was used to analyse the results from the interviews relating to instructors practices of arts integration in English language instruction and young learners motivation.
The results of the study were summarized in response to the main research questions. Firstly, most participants reported that they believed that arts integration was important to English language instruction (M=3.87, SD=0.95), and they highly supported their learners to learn with art activities (M=2.8, SD=0.64) but their level of self-efficacy was at a moderate level (M=2.03, SD= 1.09). Secondly, the results revealed that most participants used some arts in their English language instruction including songs and music, drawing, painting, crafts, story tales, cartoon movies, dance, and drama. Songs and music were found to be used the most often and on a daily basis. The interview findings indicated four key aspects to integrate arts in English instruction: to motivate learners to learn and to help learners learn new vocabulary, practice pronunciation and to practice listening and speaking skills. Thirdly, regarding young learners, it was found that they said they were motivated to learn English language when it was integrated with arts. Findings of learners motivation were summarised into four main points: learners attention, relevance of the content and learners interests, learners confidence, and learners satisfaction.
