Abstract:
This research investigated the solidification processes using lime and rice husk ash (RHA) assolidification binder at ratio of 45:55, 55:45 and 65:35. Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), sodium carbonate(Na2CO3) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) were used as activator at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%. The strengthresult showed that the ratio between lime and RHA of 45:55 with 8% sodium silicate and sodiumcarbonate have higher rate of strength development than other proportions during 28 days of curing.When the zinc-cyanide plating sludge was added to the cement mixes at 10, 20 and 30 wt.%, the 28-daystrength of the solidified wastes containing 10 wt.% plating sludge with 8% sodium silicate and sodiumcarbonate was 111.6 and 60.5 kg/cm2, respectively. It was found that the 28-day strength of the mixescontaining 20 wt.% plating sludge with 8% sodium silicate and the mixes containing 30 wt.% platingsludge with 8% sodium carbonate did not meet the minimum requirement for landfilling. Setting resultsshowed that when the amount of the plating sludge increased, the initial setting decreased but the finalsetting increased. In addition, zinc concentration in the TCLP leachates from the samples containing 20and 30 wt.% plating sludge with 8% sodium silicate and the samples containing 30 wt.% plating sludgewith 8% sodium carbonate and curing for 56 and 91 days higher than the standard limit.
