AN INSTRUCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT BY USING GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO CONSTRUCT THE UNDERSTANDING AND LEARNING RETENTION IN ART HISTORY FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to develop learning retention and understanding by using graphic organizers in art history for undergraduate students. The quasi-experimental design was conducted in this study. The samples were 29 freshman students in art education program, Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University. Five research instruments were used. They consisted of: 1) Lesson plans 2) Teaching media 3) Art history tests 4) Students behavior observation form 5) Students opinions questionnaire. The obtained data from students art history tests were analyzed by ttest statistic. The students' behavior and the opinions were analyzed by qualitative method. The research findings are as follows. 1) After students were introduced to the graphic organizers usage in the art history class, students achievement and the learning retention in art history were increased to higher level at the significance level of .05, 2) Based on students opinion it was found these following (a) graphics organizers are useful for content sequencing (b) graphics organizers are helpful for memorizing (c) graphic organizers are helpful in summarized contents. The least students opinion were graphic organizers being helpful in writing down class contents. 3) Students concentrated and showed interaction in the art history class at moderated level, but the writing and group discussion was present at low level.
