Reading strategies used By upper elementary school students at Chiang Rai Montessory English Program
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the most effective reading strategies used by upper Elementary students at PitiSuksa School Chiangrai Montessori English Program, Tambon Rim Kok, Amphoe Mueang, Chiang Rai. The sample were upper Elementary students at PitiSuksa School Chiangrai Montessori English Program. The research used 25 students, 10 boy students and 15 girl students. The instrument used in the study was a questionnaire about reading strategies. The statistics used in the study included the frequency and percentage.
The study revealed that the most common reading strategies use by upper elementary students were the direct reading strategies. In direct strategies, compensation strategies dealing with guessing intelligently and overcoming limitations enable the learners to use their learnt language in both speaking and writing even when the gaps in their knowledge prevent full understanding or expression. In terms of indirect strategies, metacognitive strategies which include arranging, planning, and evalvating allow learners to control their own cognition.The results also revealed that strategies used the most were compensation strategies and metacognitive strategies respectively.
