Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the needs for supervision of physical education teachers in the government secondary schools. The questionnaires were sent to 284 heads of health and physical education departments and the physical education teachers. Seventy-one percent of questionnaires were returned. The obtained data were analyzed in terms of percentages, means and standard deviations. A t-Test, one way analysis of variance and Newman- Keuls Multiple Comparison Methods were also employed to determine the level of significant difference. It was found that the supervision needed by physical education teachers were in the following areas ; 1. In the area of characteristic and qualification of the physical education supervisors were; a sense of responsibility, good human relationship, being friendly, dedication to the profession, self-confidence, being democratic, being a good leader, and being able to solve the problems, 2. In the area of learning and teaching were ; inservice training so that techniques and methods of teaching physical education could be exchanged, suggestion and acquisition for text-books and other materials for teaching and learning and also new methods in teaching physical education. 3. In the area of facilities and equipment were : needed help in seeking equipment and supplies including audiovisal aids and raising funds for buying equipment and constructing playing area for physical education activities. In addition, suggestion in producing physical education equipment was also needed. 4. In the area of measurement and evaluation were ; seminar and workshop in measurement and evaluation, analysis of the curriculum and the assistance in constructing the standardized test in physical education. 5. In the area of co-curricular activities were i supporting and promoting the standard of the sport players for the intramural and extramural athletic programs and assistance.coordinating the physical education programs between the school administrators and physical education teachers so that the programs could be financed adequately. 6. The types of supervision which physical education teachers needed were visitation, demonstration and conference, Through the t-test between the opinions of the heads of health and physical education departments and those of physical education teachers, it was revealed that there was no significant difference at the 0.05 level. Through the one way analysis of variance, it was also revealed that the needs for supervision among the all twelve educational regions were not significantly different at the .05 level.
