Genre-based approach to teaching academic writing in a Thai university
Abstract:
The objectives of this study were (1) to determine Thai EFL undergraduates ability to write the Introduction section of research reports before a genre-based intervention, (2) to explore Thai EFL undergraduates writing of the Introduction section of research reports after a GBA intervention, and (3) to investigate the learners motivation towards writing the Introduction section of research reports after a GBA intervention. 30 non-English major undergraduates were assigned to the control group, and another 30 in the experimental group. They were studying in English III course in second semester of 2015. The instruments comprised pre-test and post-test, GBA worksheets, pre- and post-questionnaires, self- report tasks, classroom observation checklists, and in-depth interviews. The results of this study revealed that post-test mean scores of the experimental group (M = 23.39) were higher than those of the control group (M = 10.04) with a large effect size (0.83) and a greater variety of linguistic features found in some certain steps and moves. The results of the rhetorical structures of the Introductions after the GBA intervention yielded more move patterns
in the experimental group than control group. According to the questionnaires, classroom observation checklists, and in-depth interview, most learners had positive attitudes towards their participation in the GBA class. Based on the findings of this study, the GBA intervention helped the learners to raise their genre awareness in writing the Introduction section of research reports in terms of linguistic features and rhetorical structures. It is considered that an innovative GBA approach should be integrated into more academic English writing courses for other sections of research reports and for undergraduates in other disciplines.
