Abstract:
This thesis studies whether scientific method can be used to investigate God's existence if we accept, according to scientific realism, that this method is capable of giving us knowledge of nature. The study explores philosophers' views trying to use scientific method to study God's existence. These views can be divided into 2 ways. The first is to use some evidence which can be perceived by sense experience to confirm the hypothesis about God's existence. The conclusion from the first way is that it is difficult to use scientific method to justify the hypothesis of God's existence, because the hypothesis cannot be tested by empirical criterion. Science God is not controlled by any definite law, we cannot predict any future event to test the hypothesis. The second way is to defend religious method's credibility by showing that this method is similar to scientific method. The conclusion from the second way shows that scientific method in religious matters cannot be used to justify the existence of God, because religious experience cannot give knowledge of God who is not controlled by any definite law. The conclusion of this thesis is that the scientific method can be used to study regular phenomena controlled by natural laws, but that since God is not under any definite law, it is difficult to justify the hypothesis of God's existence by the scientific method, so far concerned.
