Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate and to compare the physical fitness of Chulalongkorn Varsity Athletes participating in the thirteenth University Games of Thailand with in the group of the high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types and among the groups of the high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types. The physical fitness variables which used to compare were : the resting heart rate, the resting systolic blood pressure, the vital capacity, the trunk flexibility, the reaction time, the hand grip strength, the lower back muscle strength, the leg muscle strength, the chest muscle strength, the upper back muscle strength, the standing long jump and the maximum oxygen uptake. The obtained data were then analyzed in order to find means, standard deviations and the One Way Analysis of Variance in which the significant defference with in the group and among the groups were determined and the Sheffe test all possible comparison. It was found that: 1. The physical fitness means of Chulalongkorn University of men athletes in high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types were; 63.06, 69.50 and 77.26 beats per minute in the resting heart rate; 117.30, 116.63 and 119.47 mm.Hg in the resting systolic blood pressure; 61.76, 61.25 and 60.49 cm[superscript 3] in vital capacity; 13.71, 13.66 and 11.32 cms in the trunk flexibility; 0.186, 0.195 and 0.189 seconds in the reaction time; 0.76, 0.75 and 0.72 kilograms per body weight in the hand grip strengty; 1.66, 1.57 and 1.52 kilograms per body weight in the lower back muscle strength; 2.20, 2.13 and 1.96 kilograms per body weight in the leg muscle strength; 0.42,0.40 and 0.39 kilograms per body weight in the chest muscle strength; 0.51, 0.57 and 0.49 kilograms per body weight in the upper muscle strength; 1.34, 1.34 and 1.29 cms per body height in standing long jump; 57.67, 51.05 and 44.39 milliliters per kilogram per minute in the maximum oxygen uptake. 2. The physical fitness means of Chulalongkorn University of women athletes in high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types were; 71.38, 73.31 and 77.31 beats per minute in the resting heart rate; 108.87, 106.81 and 110.54 mm.Hg in the resting systolic blood pressure; 51.98, 50.86 and 49.40 cm[superscript 3] in the vital capacity; 15.86, 13.47 and 13.29 cms in the trunk flexibility; 0.184, 0.192 and 0.197 seconds in the reaction time; 0.66,0.59 and 0.55 kilograms per body weight in the hand grip strength; 1.36, 1.31 and 1.02 kilograms per body weight in the lower back muscle strength; 1.85, 1.83 and 1.68 kilograms per body weight in the leg muscle strength; 0.30, 0.27 and 0.25 kilograms per body weight in the chest muscle strength; 0.38, 0.35 and 0.34 kilograms per body weight in the upper muscle strength; 1.20, 1.18 and 1.10 cms per body height in the standing long jump; 50.87, 47.07 and 40.27 milliliters per kilogram per minute in the maximum oxygen uptake. 3. The physical fitness of Chulalongkorn University of men athletes with in the group of high cardiovascular endurance sport types (8 sports) were not significantly different at the .05 level, with in the group of medium cardiovascular endurance sport types (9 sports) were not significantly different at the .05 level except in the leg muscle strength and with in the group of low cardiovascular endurance sport types (4 sports) were not significantly different at the .05 level. 4. The physical fitness of Chulalongkorn University of women athletes with in the group of high cardiovascular endurance sport types (5 sports) were not significantly different at the .05 level except in the leg muscle strength, with in the group of medium cardiovascular endurance sport types (7 sports) were not significantly different at the .05 level and with in the group of low cardiovascular endurance sport types (4 sport) were not significantly different at the .05 level except in the leg muscle strength. 5. The physical fitness of Chulalongkorn University of men athletes among the groups of high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types were not significantly different at the .05 level except in the resting heart rate and the maximum oxygen uptake. 6. The physical fitness of Chulalongkorn University of women athletes among the groups of high, medium and low cardiovascular endurance sport types were not significantly different at the .05 level except in the resting heart rate, the lower back muscle strength and the maximum oxygen uptake.
