Abstract:
The aim of this independent study was to analyse the efficiency of the production process at Surat Siripirya (1999) Co., Ltd. The study included an analysis of the causes and solutions to the problems of the production process of the company.
Based on the study of performance data, it was found that the companys Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) in 2015 was 61.55% and 67.50% in January-March 2016, which was significantly lower than the world standard at 85.00% due to the low rate of operation as a result of high lost time from the machinery breakdown.
The causes of lost time loss affecting the availability rate were examined. There were four main reasons, namely repeating the process of bringing the rubber into the oven, a dysfunction of the grinding machines, a dysfunction of the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and a dysfunction of the dryers. From the brainstorming session among the person concerned by applying the 5M1E (Man, Material, Method, Machine, Measurement, and Environment) analysis to identify the main causes, secondary causes and other possible causes to assess the risk level (Risk Priority Number RPN) according to the FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) table, it was found that the root of the problems mentioned above lied in the other possible causes, namely negligence of employees, employees lack of the job knowledge, incorrect operation methods, the frequent machinery breakdown, and inappropriate raw materials.
The casual loop diagram was applied to provide an overview of correcting and improving the cause of the lost time affecting the availability rate. The ECRS
(Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange and Simplify) techniques were also adapted to offer solutions to the problems, such as training staff on machine operation and maintenance, setting the standard for raw material management, creating a handbook to form the job knowledge as well as installing more work facilities to improve work efficiency. After the improvement, the average OEE in June-December 2016 was 76.32%, which was 17.10% higher than that of the same period in 2015, as a result of the higher availability rate because of the decline in lost time from the machinery breakdown.
