Abstract:
There are many types of acne vulgaris with differently appropriate treatment. Green tea has recently become popular and suggested to be an extract as main reactant in cream for relieving acne infection and inflammation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the treatment of acne vulgaris by 5 %green tea extract cream. Thirty participants, men and women who aged between 12-40 years old with mild to moderate grading of acne were enrolled to this study. All subjects were assigned to apply topical green tea extract cream on one side of the half face and the other side by placebo cream. The efficacy was evaluated by lesions counting for non- inflammatory and inflammatory acnes, acne grading scale, sebum levels, side effects and subject satisfaction. The result revealed the lesion counting of non-inflammatory acnes significantly decreased from baseline at the second week and the lesion counting of inflammatory acnes significantly decreased from baseline at the fourth week of the study. The severity of acne significantly improved at the fourth week. The adverse effect, only mild peeling skin was observed and improved with hydration. Almost of the participants were satisfied with the result of topical green tea extract at the twelfth week of the study. As results, Topical green tea extract cream is effective and safe in treatment of both non- inflammatory and inflammatory acne vulgaris. Only minor adverse effect was observed.
