Abstract:
Introduction: Periorbital wrinkle is one of the first signs of dermal aging which could make a majority of people feel concerned by its effects on cosmetic appearance. In present, there are many treatments of periorbital wrinkles. Vitamin A derivatives have been used for a long time and have been found to be efficacious for reduction of the periorbital wrinkles. However, high concentration of tretinoin could bring to various side effects. Extract from Riceberry as could increase collagen production ,reduce collagen degradation, have anti-oxidative effect and may be an alternative medicine for treatment wrinkle.
Objective: To study on the efficacy and the side effects of Riceberry extract cream for periorbital wrinkles.
Materials and Methods: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-blind, Experimental Clinical trial in 23 female subjects who had periorbital wrinkles, aged 30 to 60 years old. Apply riceberry extract cream in one side around eye and another side apply standard cream base in the morning and before bedtime everyday for 12 weeks. Assessments of wrinkles by Rao-Goldman 5-points visual scoring scale by a researcher, measurement of wrinkles by Visioscan®VC98, measurement of skin elasticity by Cutometer® MPA580, and assessment of side effects were done at 4th week, 8th week and 12th week of the study. The satisfied scores (by subjects) and clinical improvement (by 3 doctors who not involved in this research) were evaluated at week12.
Results: The riceberry extract cream applied-side had earlier result than the other side (standard cream base) in the level of wrinkle (measured by Rao- Goldman 5- point scoring scale ) that improved significantly at week 4, while standard cream base at week8. In 8 weeks, Efficacy of Riceberry extract cream of decreasing periorbital wrinkles is comparable to that of standard base cream with significant statistical difference (p=0.025). In 12 weeks, Efficacy of riceberry extract cream of decreasing periorbital wrinkles(measured by Visioscan®VC98) is comparable to that of standard cream base with significant statistical difference (p =0.020).The elasticity (measured by Cutometer MPA580), Efficacy of Riceberry extract cream and standard base cream had no statistically significant differences. Assessment of pictures by physicians in two groups has no significance. The participants had no significant diferrence in side-effects between both groups . Satisfactory rate of Riceberry extract cream is higher among the subjects than that of base cream with statistically significant(p=0.014) and at last there are 20 participants (87%) who choose riceberry extract cream for the continued treatment of their periorbital wrinkles But only 3 participants (13%) who choose standard cream base.
Conclusion: Riceberry extract cream can reduce the wrinkles by Rao-Goldman 5-point scoring scale assessment, significantly wrinkle reduction by visioscan. Elasticity increase by cutometer but no significant diferrence between both groups. The satisfied scores were significantly better for participants with riceberry extract cream .The participants had no significant diferrence in side-effects between both groups.
