Abstract:
The study was aimed at investigating the Thai secondary schools students
extent of acceptance of and attitudes toward the varieties of English in the ASEAN
context. The study comprised 567 secondary school students from the different study
programs namely the Regular Program, English Program, and International Program
from three secondary schools in the south of Thailand. The data were collected via the
questionnaires and the semi-structured interviews which 12 students volunteered to
participate. Three characteristic themes were emerged namely the Nativeness
Believers, the Flexible Englishers, and the Varieties Supporters. The findings revealed
that most of the students were the Flexible Englishers and could somewhat accept
varieties of English. However, among the English varieties, the Thai English was
quite unacceptable for the students. The students attitudes toward the English
varieties were somewhat positive. This research advises the learners and organization
concerned with English learning and teaching to improve and instill in students the
positive attitude toward the varieties of English to best advantage the learners of
English in the ASEAN context.
