Abstract:
This research project aimed to study the relationships between perceived
working environment and job stress among civil service officers at Takham City
municipality. This study related the effects of personal characteristics factors and
perceived working environment factors on job stress. The study population consisted
of 175 civil service officers at Takham City municipality. Data was gathered by means
of a questionnaire and was analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard
deviation, and the Chi-square test.
The findings revealed that Takham City municipality officers are mostly male.
The most frequently mentioned demographic factors were age between 31-40,
married, having a bachelors degree, having sufficient income relative to expenditures,
having 5 to 15 years of work experience, and being direct employees of the
municipality. They felt comfortable with their level of awareness of their working
environment. Their stress in the job setting was at a normal level.
The hypothesis testing found that personal factors such as gender are related
to stress at work, with a statistical significance at the 0.05 level of confidence. As for
their awareness of the work environment, their ability to smoothly accomplish their
goals had significant correlations with stress in the workplace at a statistical
significance at 0.05 level of confidence. The appropriateness of the size of the
physical work environment had a relationship to workers stress at the 0.05 level of
confidence. Finally, in the area of psychosocial environment, it was found that the fair
division of tasks and responsibilities, the ability to work cooperatively, the ability to
help each other wholeheartedly, the ability to receive supportive advice from
superiors on how to fix problems, and good relationships with fellow employees had
relationships with stress in the workplace at the 0.05 level of statistical significance.
