Abstract:
This study focused on employing Facebook as a site for Thai EFL students English journal writing in a Thai context. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to explore to explore how Facebook can facilitate Thai EFL students journal writing, and investigate students perception of benefits and barriers from using Facebook for their journal writing assignments. The participants were 10 undergraduate students enrolled in an English Reading and Writing course. The students were required to complete their 4 journal entries (1 entry per week). Findings showed that most students wrote narrative journal entries (33 entries), and most of them wrote about their college or class activities (16 entries) and their daily lives (12 entries). All students used Facebook to chat with their classmates while they were writing their journal entries. The major phenomena found in the students journal entries were the influence of their L1 on L2 writing and word-for-word translation. A survey questionnaire was used to analyze the students perception towards using Facebook for their journal writing outside the classroom. Findings from the survey questionnaire revealed that most students expressed their satisfaction toward using Facebook for their journal writing. They perceived Facebook as a site for their thought expressions through journal writing that made them feel more relaxed than in the classroom. It was found, however, that a few students did not concentrate on learning when they used Facebook. Findings from the focus group interview helped the researcher to identify problems encountered by individual students. More studies are recommended to explore how different types of social media affect Thai students language acquisition through writing.
