Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to examine 6-8-year-old students' cognitive development and memory abilities and the relationships thereof. It was compared the cognitive development and such abilities of the students in different school environments.A sample consisted of 58 students aged from 6-8 years in Bangkok Metropolis. The instruments consisted of a test of school environments, cognitive development tests based on Piaget's theory of intellectual development, and a test of memory abilities. Data was analyzed in terms of percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and Pearson Product-Moment correlation coefficient.The fmdings were as follows:1. The school environments were significantly different (p<.Ol).2. Some students reached pre-operational stage in line with Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Some did not.3. The students exhibited moderate level of memory abilities.4. There were no significant differences in cognitive development among students who experienced different school environments.5. There were no significant differences in memory abilities among students who achieved different levels of Piaget's cognitive development.6. There were positive but low relationships between students' cognitive development and memory abilities (r = .337).
