Effects of using podcasts and self-reflection activities with Thai TEFL university students
Abstract:
This study investigated whether podcasts can be used to promote positive
attitudes toward self-reflection for the development of speaking in Thai TEFL
university students. A semester long podcast and self-reflection project, utilizing
technology within a Constructivist approach, was implemented with 75 TEFL students
at a university in northern Thailand. The participants were convenience sampled from
the second year Listening and Speaking course within which the project was
implemented. They completed ten podcast recordings and self-reflections throughout
the semester and also completed a final written self-reflection report at the end of the
semester. Quantitative data were gathered via an adapted version of Elliots (1995)
Pronunciation Attitude Inventory that was administered pre-treatment and posttreatment.
Qualitative data were collected via focus groups at the end of the semester
and also from the participants final written self-reflection reports. The quantitative data
were analyzed using mean and median to determine the attitude for particular items,
and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test to compare the pre-treatment and post-treatment
survey responses; the effect size was identified using the Effect Sizes for Non(
Parametric Data Calculation. The qualitative data were analyzed using the Scissorand-
Sort Technique to identify any themes and attitudes the students expressed toward
the podcast and self-reflection activities, as well as any effects on self-awareness and
ability to self-monitor, their self-esteem and self-confidence when speaking.
The results revealed that the podcast and self-reflection activities had a positive
impact on the students learner autonomy, language skills and self-confidence, and that
the participants felt the podcast and self-reflection activities were useful. There were
significant increases in the students belief in their ability to identify their own
pronunciation errors and their belief that they can improve their English pronunciation,
as well as a significant increase in the students attitude toward recording themselves
and doing self-reflections.
