Design guidelines for mobile phone applications for the middleaged adults
Abstract:
The mobile phone technology has provided several benefits to old people by helping them improve their quality of life (QoL). For the current generation of elders, learning to use mobile phones has been a difficult task because they do not have much experience with the mobile phones when they were young. However, the current group of middle-aged adults, who are going to be the future generation of elders, already have a lot of experience with mobile phone usage. It is likely that these middle-aged adults will have different needs and requirements of mobile phone applications when they grow older. The purpose of this study is to investigate needs and requirements of middle-aged mobile phone users in regard to maintaining their quality of life in the future. The study used a questionnaire that consisted of questions asking respondents to rate the significance of different mobile applications. Two hundred respondents took part in the survey. The results showed that the health care applications received the highest percentage of respondents indicating that the applications must be included in the mobile phones. Finally, a prototype for mobile phone application has been designed and tested. The results of the tested prototypes have been shown accordingly for designing guidelines of mobile phone applications for the future generation of elderly mobile phone users.
