A study of the relationship between self-awareness and oral presentation performance of graduate students of King Mongkut
Abstract:
The objectives of this study were (1) to identify the interaction between
students self-awareness and oral presentation performance, (2) to identify the
improvements on oral presentation performance of students during the course, and (3)
to investigate the student s perceptions of their improving performance in oral
presentation. The population was graduate students of King Mongkuts University of
Technology North Bangkok. The sample group was a classroom of Ph.D. students
from the Faculty of Technical Education majoring in Technical Education
Administration. The students had two times of presenting oral presentation in front of
the class. There were two evaluators who analyzed the students performance. An
evaluation form for evaluators was developed to analyze the students oral
presentation performance concerning in verbal and nonverbal aspects. Consequently,
a questionnaire for students was developed to collect the students self-awareness.
The evaluation form and the questionnaire were designed to have parallel items.
Moreover, the reliability coefficients were used to check the reliabilities between the
evaluators. The researcher used the spearmans correlation to measure the relationship
between two variables: students self-awareness and oral presentation performances.
The mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage were used to analyze the
data as well.
The findings revealed that (1) there were positive significant relationships
between oral presentation performance and student self-awareness in the 1st and 2nd
oral presentation at .01 level. (2) The results from the presentation evaluation form
indicated that the students performance in the 2nd oral presentation was better than in the 1st oral presentation (mean = 3.37, 4.19). Moreover, the students also improved on
other compliments such as greeting, telling name and background, telling topic of
presentation, explaining objectives, giving opportunity to ask question, and telling
time to spend. (3) The students perceptions of their presentation improvement
indicated that the students have positive perceptions towards the 1st and 2nd oral
presentation performance with the mean scores of 3.50 and 4.10 respectively. In
addition, the results from students perceptions showed need to improve the
performance as follows; speak with correct grammar (60%), how to collect
information (25%), how to speak accurate pronunciation (10%), and technique to
practice oral presentation (5%).
