Abstract: Today’s research and industrial approaches of factory planning emphasise the market based view and support the design of flexible and agile factories, which can react to unplanned changes in market. However, from the perspective of strategic management, an isolated market view is not the best way of designing a complex system. Many empirical studies give evidence that the development of unique capabilities and competencies inside the factory contributes to creating competitive advantages, just as much as market driven management does. The development of competencies required to become unique and valuable, demands a long period of time (experience curve). Within the research project “Resource Oriented Factory Planning” (funding by the German Research Foundation) a new approach has been developed to answer the question which resources must be designed to support stability and the experience curve and which resources have to be exchangeable and flexible to react to external changes. The approach is based on a decision model that focuses on factory resources. To identify the strategic value of resources the inside-out and outside-in perspectives of the capitalized value are combined and compared to the net asset value. The position of the resources within a value portfolio leads to recommendations for the design of these resources.
