An investigation of communication strategies of international undergraduate students in Bangkok
Abstract:
This research aims to investigate Communication Strategies of international
undergraduate students in Bangkok when speaking English in real situations. The study is
intended to explore which strategies students used in communication. The findings
attempted to answer the following four research questions: 1. What Communication
Strategies are applied by international students to achieve communication success? 2. Are
there any differences in the Communication Strategies used by the students from different
countries? 3. Are there any differences in the Communication Strategies used by the
students from different faculties? 4. Are there any differences in the Communication
Strategies applied by male and female students? This survey research employed
questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as research tools to collect data. The
subjects consisted of 400 undergraduate students in four universities in Bangkok. Most of
them were first year international students from different faculties. The author analyzed
the data based on the framework of Communication Strategies proposed by Færch and
Kasper (1984); Dornyei (1995); Tarone (1981); Willems (1987); Bygate (1995);
Gasparro (1996); Corder (1986) and Chomjinda (1994). The statistical procedures
employed to analyze the data were percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, and ttest
through SPSS program. The results showed that the majority of the students
occasionally used Communication Strategies. Most of them usually used 1)
Circumlocution at the most, 2) Self-repair, 3) Approximation, 4) Smurfing and 5) Appeal
for help. They occasionally used Achievement strategies more than Reduction strategies.
The students who are with different countries, faculties and gender did not have
differences in the use of the Communication Strategies. The findings of the study can be
used to improve and prepare the program for training specific education in several fields.
Communication Strategies can be use to develop communication ability of students.
