Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the notion of allusion in seven contemporary Thai Nirat. The texts selected are Lam Nam Phu Kra Dung and Bangkok Keaw Kam Suan by Ankarn Kanlayanapong, Mai Het Ruam Samai by Paiboon Wongtes, Khean Phan Din by Nawarat Pongpaiboon, Ma Kan Klouy and Klon Klom Lok by Paiwarin Khao-ngam and Khlong Nirat Mae Moh by Kongpob Ruensiri. The purpose of this thesis is to study various types of allusion, and to analyze the relation between the allusion and the message and emotion conveyed by the poets. The study reveals that various types of allusion appear in contemporary Thai Nirat such as the allusion from Thai literary texts, both modern and classical texts, including folktales and songs. There are also the allusion from people and other significant events. The poets use allusion to convey message and create emotions by converting, implying or referring to another texts, events or persons in order to convey the message and the poets point of view more powerfully. The poets use various types of allusion to convey various messages and emotions in the texts. For example, several poets lament for their beloved by referring to expression of sorrow in the classical texts in order to emphasize their sorrow. Another significant message is patriotism to their country. The poets use allusion to persuade the readers to value and cherish the countrys heritage. Finally, the poets use allusion as a means to criticize society. The poets refer to good examples and offer salutations. On the other hand, the poets refer to social problems by means of satire and condemnation. This is to create strong impact on the readers to make the readers more aware and more willing to amend our society.
