Abstract:
Research Objective The main objective of this study is to analyze the content of the elementary curriculum B.E. 2521 at the Prathom 5 - 6 level to find out how it embraces desirable citizenship characteristics. Research Method The researcher studied texts, theses, researches and some of other publications concerning desirable citizenship characteristics, The elements of desirable citizenship characteristics were considered by 31 welknown social experts. Finally 36 citi¬zenship characteristics were indentified and used as this research variables. As well, the citizenship characteristics were classified into three kinds of behaviors as towards oneself, other people and the environments. The seven classifications of content analyzed from curriculum materials are : factual information and verbal knowledge, concepts, principles, problem solving, creati¬vity, skills, and attitude and values. The curriculum, teachers' handbooks and teaching plans at the Prathom 5 - 6 level were used as the sourcess of information to be analyzed. The statistics employed were frequency, mode and percentage. Research finding 1. The desirable citizenship characteristics appeared in all data resources for 1,550 times as 360 times or 19.47% in elementary curriculum B.E. 2521 document, 582 times or 37.54% in Prothom 5 teachers' handbooks and teaching plans, and 662 times or 42.70% in Prathom 6 teachers': handbooks and teaching plans. The citizenship characteristics that appeared in each curriculum group of experience fellows : 398 times or 25.6% in Tool Subjects, 338 times or 21.80% in Life Experiences, 440 times or 28.33% in Character Educational, 159 times or 10.25% in Work Oriented, and 215 times or 13.8% in Special Experience area. 2. The first ten desirable citizenship characteristics appeared priority of orderly in the data resources namely reasoning competency, responsibility, constant self-consciousness, diligece, creative thinking, work planning, disciplinary and orderly practice, proud of being Thai, ecomomic consciousness, and politeness orderly, practice. 3. There were desirable citizenship characteristics that did not appeared in some data resources namely enthusiastic and futuristic in theachers' handbooks and teaching planns, political awareness and participation in the elementary curriculum documents at Prathom 5 - 6 level. 4. The curriculum content that incoorperated most the desirable citizenship characteristics was skills are for 407 times or 26.25%. All seven content categories appeared orderly as follows; (1) skill (for 407 times or 26.25%). (2) principles (for 286 times or 18.45%). (3) problem solving (for 271 times or 17.48%). (4) factual information and verbal knowledge (for 189 times or 12.19%). (5) attitude and values (for 177 times or 11.41%). (6) concepts (for 138 times or 8.90%). (7) creativity (for 82 times or 5.29%). 5. The desirable citizenship characteristics appeared most are behaviors towards oneself for 655 times or 42.25%. The next are behaviors towards the environments for 454 times or 29.29%, and the least behaviors towards other people for 411 times or 28.45%.
