Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the main' characteristics of the sportsmanship. One hundred and twenty-five physical educators and educators were selected as a. jury of experts to evaluate the most common characteristics of sportsmanship according to the scales set up by the investigator. The obtained data were analyzed into means and standard deviations. One way analysis of variance was also employed to determine the significant differences. It was found that the main charateristics of sportsman-ship should be comprised of knowing how to be a good loser, how to be a good winner and how to be able to forgive. To be a good loser meant to be able to control one's self properly without revenging and being jealous after losing a game and also to be able to accept the result of the games nicely. To be a good winner meant to win a game with one's own physical strength and ability with out looking down the loser either by words or actions and at the same time to be able to control one's self properly after winning a game. To be able to forgive meant one's ability to forgive one's teammate or one's opponents during the game. Furthermore, the main characteristics of sportsmanship included : abiding by the rules of the games, abiding by the decision of the umpires, respecting for the rights and duty of the others, being self discipline, having a sense of responsibi¬lity to one's own action, being able to control one's self, being persistent, friendly, unity, loyalty, courage, broad-minded, politeness, and sacrifice one's self for the group, having a sense of humor, participating and competing in sports and games according to the sports and games ideal without creeds, race, and nationality, and last but not least, to play games according to game strategies and also at one's own ability without taking the result of the games seriously.
