A comparative study of two Thai students studying abroad and in Thailand

Abstract: This study is an attempt to analyze the factors leading to successful and unsuccessful language learner, and identify the major problems of two Thai students who studied abroad and in Thailand focusing on their motivation, cross-cultural attitude, and culture shock. This study also presents similarities and differences between them. In addition, their language learning strategies are revealed by asking them to take Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The result of the content analysis indicates that the sample who has studied abroad and the other one who has studied in Thailand did not perform differently on SILL. They used language learning strategies moderately: Ms.Kaewta studying abroad got 3.4 scores and Ms.Donhatai studying in her home country got 3.12 scores on an average. Despite this surprising finding, Ms.Kaewta exhibits less motivational intensity than the other one as measured by the constructed Motivational Intensity Inventory which found that the student having high motivation scores achieved better in English than the one having low motivation scores. There is no doubt that measuring student motivation can give information relevant to student achievement and cause of her failure. Interviews were also carried out by the researcher for analysis. From interviewing two Thai students, the results reported in Chapter 3 demonstrate that their personal background and language learning experience were significantly different which are taken into consideration. These differences include financial support from family, awareness of the importance of English language, and a great advantage of school curriculums and extra classes at school. There was, however, no cross-cultural attitude or culture shock affecting their language learning.

Abstract: การวิจัยนี้ มุ่งวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อผู้เรียนภาษาที่ประสบความสำเร็จและไม่ประสบ ความสำเร็จ โดยการศึกษาปัญหาหลักของนักศึกษาไทย 2 คน ที่เรียนต่างประเทศ และเรียนในประเทศ ไทย โดยมุ่งปัจจัยไปที่แรงจูงใจในการเรียนรู้ ทัศนคติและปัญหาทางวัฒนธรรม การศึกษาชิ้นนี้ยังแสดง ให้ถึงลักษณะการเรียนรู้ และปัจจัยของผู้เรียน รวมทั้งกลยุทธ์ในการเรียนภาษาโดยการทำแบบทดสอบ (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning: SILL) ผลเฉลี่ยของการทำแบบทดสอบกลยุทธ์ในการ เรียนภาษา (SILL) แสดงว่าทั้ง 2 คน ใช้กลยุทธ์ไม่แตกต่างกัน และอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง โดยนางสาว แก้วตา ซึ่งเรียนในต่างประเทศ ใช้กลยุทธ์เฉลี่ย 3.4 และนางสาวดลหทัย ซึ่งเรียนในประเทศไทย มีผล เฉลี่ย 3.12 ซึ่งแตกต่างจากทฤษฎีของการใช้กลยุทธ์ในการเรียนภาษา อย่างไรก็ตาม ผลการวัดโดย การทำแบบทดสอบแรงจูงใจในการเรียนภาษา ปรากฎว่านางสาวแก้วตา มีแรงจูงใจในการเรียน ภาษาอังกฤษน้อยกว่านางสาวดลหทัย ซึ่งตรงกับทฤษฎีว่านักศึกษาที่มีคะแนนความจูงใจสูงจะประสบ ความสำเร็จในการเรียนภาษาดีกว่านักศึกษาที่มีคะแนนความจูงใจต่ำ มักจะสรุปได้ว่าแรงจูงใจของ ผู้เรียนให้ข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้องกันกับความสำเร็จของผู้เรียนและเป็นสาเหตุของความล้มเหลวหรือ ความสำเร็จในการเรียนภาษา ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการสัมภาษณ์เพื่อประกอบการวิเคราะห์ผลด้วย ซึ่งจากการ สัมภาษณ์ พบว่าข้อมูลส่วนตัวและประสบการในการเรียนภาษาของนักศึกษาไทย 2 คนนี้แตกต่างกัน มาก นั่นคือ การสนับสนุนด้านการเงินจากครอบครัว การตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษ และความได้เปรียบของหลักสูตรการเรียนการสอนของโรงเรียน รวมถึงการเรียนพิเศษที่โรงเรียนด้วย อย่างไรก็ตาม การวิจัยนี้ไม่พบทัศนคติที่ไม่ดีทางวัฒนธรรม และความตกใจทางวัฒนธรรม ในการเรียน ภาษาของนักศึกษาไทย 2 คนนี้
