Abstract:
Questioning is a technique that most teachers used to get student's participation, this
study aims to investigate using questioning techniques by Cole and Chan to see the
factors affecting the success of the use of questioning techniques.
The study was conducted with 3 foreign English language teachers, who taught under
the same topic in the course LNG 221: Oral Communication I in 3 classes (25-30
students a class) of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering, King
Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). The research instrument
was the transcripts from the video recorder.
The result of the study indicated that each teacher used different questioning techniques
to help students to answer the question. 'Redirecting' was only one technique that all
teachers did not use. In addition, the most successful technique was 'prompting'.
However, the success of teacher's questioning did not depend on the numbers of
techniques used.
In order to get student's participation when asking the questions, the teacher should be
aware of the level of difficulty of questions in terms of language and students'
background knowledge, visual support, atmosphere in the classroom, teacher's own
personality and waiting time.
