Student satisfaction towards chinese teaching and learning process : a case study at Traimit Wittayalai School, Bangkok, Thailand
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to study student satisfaction towards
the Chinese teaching and learning processes, to compare student satisfaction towards
the Chinese teaching and learning processes based on students overall status, and to
identify problems regarding the Chinese teaching and learning processes at Traimit
Wittayalai School (TWS), Bangkok, Thailand. Both a questionnaire and interviews
were used for data collection from 296 students and six Chinese teachers in September
2009, and the data were analyzed statistically. The results were:
1. The survey samples included 176 (59.5%) junior and 120 (40.5%) senior
students. Of these students, 26 had an excellent GPA, 119 were above average, 135 were
average, and 16 were pass. Of these students, 39.9, 53.3, and 7% received strong,
moderate, and weak parental support for learning the Chinese language, respectively.
2. This study did not find a significant difference in students overall
satisfaction by the class level (P > 0.05), whereas students academic achievements
(GPA) and levels of parental support were significantly associated with student
satisfaction towards Chinese learning (P < 0.05).
3. Most students were highly satisfied with the factors related to the
teachers performance. However, both the questionnaire and open-ended questions
revealed possible areas of improvement in teachers performance, especially in the
areas of knowledge and experience, and instructional process.
4. Interviews with the teachers also revealed consistent problems that may
be pertinent to all Chinese teaching in Thai secondary schools, including the need for
training of the teachers, updated teaching materials, standardized curriculum, and
modern language teaching media.
In order to improve Chinese teaching and learning in Thai secondary
schools, it is recommended that teachers should enhance their subject knowledge and
teaching experience and adopt student-oriented teaching methods. Parental support
needs to be strengthened to further motivate students learning. Meanwhile, there is an
urgent need to standardize the curricula, develop more updated teaching materials, and
facilitate the applications of contemporary instruction media to promote the
effectiveness of Chinese teaching in Thai secondary schools.
