Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was to study the life and works of Master Thiap
Konglaithong , especially the way he taught his students how to play the Thai classical
pipe, Peenai. Moreover, a study of Thai music culture as seen in his teaching process
was undertaken. Methodology of the research was that of cultural anthropology. The
data came from documents and field works. Participant observations and interview of
key informants campnised the main data. Then, the analysis of data was done, and
presentation of the reseach was in description, using photos and musical notes.
The findings were that Master Thiap Konglaithong studied Peenai with Phraya
Sanorduriyang, a very famous Thai music master. He not only learned not only how to
play music well but also how to behave as a good person. Thats why he was admired
as an excellent piper and also a good teacher.
As for the Peenai teaching process, the Master taught his students according to
their personal ability. He was kind and always helped the students with all his force.
In pipe training, finger practice in relation with aspiration control was delicately and
repeatedly done in order to produce good sound. The song Tao-kin-phak-bung was a
basic song used for this practice.
This research studied Thai music culture and Thiap Konglaithong as a
traditional Thai music master, a man of wisdom, and a teacher who had good methods
in teaching which we could follow in order to maintain and continue Thailand is
valuable music heritage.
