Sexual problem is important among adolescents because it can lead to
unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease and HIV infection. Sex education
can help prevent adolescents from sexual problem.
The objectives of this study was to study knowledge, attitude and sexual
behavior of high school students compared to the standards set up in the guidelines of
education activities on sexuality by Ministry of Education in 2005. This is a
descriptive research. The sample group comprises 184 students, who were studying in
high school in Chumphon province. Data were collected by using self-administered
questionnaires during 1 to 28 February, 2007. Statistic for data analysis was
frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.
The result of this study showed that most of students (81.0%) had low level of
knowledge about sex when compared to the standards in the guidelines. Most of them
knew little about contraception, sexually transmitted disease and HIV infection.
Regarding attitude toward sex of students about 96.7% of students had appropriate
attitude about sexual health. Regarding sexual behavior, most of them (94.0%) were of
low risk according to the guidelines. 7.3% of them had ever date in private with
persons whom they knew through internet communications.
In conclusion, with guidelines of Ministry of Education were used as a
standard to evaluate knowledge, attitude, and sexual behavior among early high school
students, it was found that knowledge about sex of those students were low, with
appropriate attitude and low risk sexual behavior. It is necessary that these guidelines
should be put into practice as soon as possible to prevent sexual problem that would
arise among these students in the future.
