Factors related to handwriting readiness in the 1st grade children
Abstract:
Handwriting skills are recognized as a part of academic skills in elementary
school. This cross-sectional study analyzed handwriting readiness contributing in 1ST
grade students. Purposive sampling was used: there were 203 students from
Phutthamonthon, Nakhonpathom province. Frequency, percentage, standard deviation,
Chi-square, Eta correlation, independent t-test and Pearsons correlation were used for
data analysis.
The results showed the handwriting readiness was significantly correlated
with visual perception, motor skills, pattern of the pencil grip, and frequency of
learning participation from teachers. Handwriting readiness was not significantly
correlated with dominant hand strengths and frequency of learning participation from
parents. For the handwriting readinesss components, visual perception was
significantly correlated with motor skills. Dominant hand strength was also
significantly correlated with pattern of pencil grip, visual perception, and motor skills.
Handwriting skills consist of complex factors. The findings suggest that
parents and teachers should realize these factors for further assistance when a student
is identified as having handwriting difficulties.
