The study of a junior guitar course, step 1, in Siam Kolkarn Music school, Yamaha music foundation of Japan, Thailand.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was finding the appropriate Junior Guitar Course
(JGC) Book 1 for kids, age 8-11 years old, in Siam Kolkarn Music School, Yamaha
Music Foundation of Japan, Yamaha Music Academy, Bangkok. The methodology
was qualitative research, with purposive sampling. The research sample was 14
people. The study used information from the curriculum and reviewed the relevant
literature, along with the information from both formal and informal interviews,
between B.E. 2549 and 2551.
The results revealed that guitar scholars and instructors mostly agreed on the
Junior Guitar Course Step 1, having concordant ideas about teaching Thai kids, age 8-
11. Using foreign lyrics to develop listening skills and singing, which was the main
objective of the curriculum, was felt inappropriate with kids because of the
strangeness of the language. It was felt the music should be arranged with Thai lyrics.
However, the guitar scholars and instructors mostly believed that the problem
in class was the body pattern and development of the children. They had too little
dexterity and power in left and right finger muscles for playing the guitar. Even
through this issue was not addressed by the JGC Step 1, both kids and parents
expected that the kids would be able to play the guitar well. Moreover, the class could
not open group lesson. Thus, the music instructor must essentially explain the main
objective of the curriculum for in-depth understanding to every child and parent.
