Small scale fishermen's opinions regarding the breeding of sea mussels for a parttime job : a case study of fishing village Banpakkrongpamong Tambon Phantainorasingh Samuthsakhon province
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to study the opinions, the factors influencing
opinions, the difficulties, recommendations of small scale fisherman regarding the
breeding of sea mussels for a part time job in a fishing village in Banpakkrongpamong,
Samuthsakhon Province.
This research was conducted as survey research using questionnaires and in-depth
interviews. Sample participants consisted of 113 head of households or representative of
families who had made their livings from small scale fishery and breeding sea mussels as
supplementary income in the fishing village of Banpakkrongpamong, Samuthsakhon
Province. Data derived from the study was analyzed using percentages, means, standard
deviation, T-tests and one-way analysis of variance.
Results of the study indicated that most sample participants moderately agreed with
the breeding of sea mussels for supplementary income. After studying fishermens
opinions, the findings revealed that the number of household members, community
member status and attitude toward small scale fishing were factors that created significant
differences (at 0.001) in opinion among small scale fishermen toward the breeding of sea
mussels for supplementary income as well as in the duration of small scale fishing (at
0.01). Average monthly income and perceived value of natural resources and environment
also contributed to small scale fishermens opinions regarding the breeding of sea
mussels as supplementary income, with statistical difference at 0.05. As for problems and
setbacks, it as found that industrial waste water affected growth and dying rate of sea
mussels, and that storms and strong currents damaged sea mussels poles. In addition there
were problems relating to investments and debts.
This study suggests to recommendations in breeding sea mussels as supplementary
income in Banpakkrongpamong, Samuthsakhon Province. Assistance is necessary from
concerned public and private sectors in breeding sea mussels as supplementary income
including ways to solve problems from industrial and natural waste water. Furthermore,
the government should provide more knowledge to small scale fishermen regarding
breeding of sea mussels as well as designating proper areas. More assistance should be
provided with funding and financed problems for this purpose. Enforcing laws in regard to
setting up proper locations for breeding sea mussels should be considered to prevent or
alleviate further problems that might occur.
