Quality of work life of laboratory personnel in Siriraj Hospital
Abstract:
The objectives of this qualitative study, medical laboratory personnel in Siriraj hospital for their level of quality of work life, and their job characteristic, and to study the relationship between these two factors. Data collection was done by way of questionnaire distributed to 218 medical laboratory personnel who had been working for 1 year at Siriraj Hospital. Data was analyzed using a computer software program.
The study revealed that the overall quality of work life of medical laboratory personnel in Siriraj Hospital, when scored out of low, moderate, and high was at the moderate level (M = 58.78). Three aspects of quality of work life, job involvement, job satisfaction and job stress, were at the moderate level (M = 63.79, 56.29 and 56.10 respectively). Job characteristics of medical laboratory personnel in Siriraj Hospital were at the moderate level (M = 3.32) and the skill variety aspect of job characteristics was at the high level (M = 3.55). Task identity, feedback, task significance and autonomy were at the moderate level (M = 3.39, 3.28, 3.26 and 3.12 respectively). Job characteristics had a statistically significance (p < 0.01) positive relationship, with the quality of work life (r = 0.34). The feedback aspects of job characteristics had a positive relationship at the moderate level with quality of work life (r = 0.30), and task identity, autonomy, skill variety and task significance had a positive relationship at the low level with quality of work life (r = 0.26, 0.25, 0.24 and 0.16 respectively) at the level of significance (p < 0.01). Medical laboratory personnel should be encouraged in terms of continuing education, as well as in advancement, proper environment, fair benefits and fair job title allocations.
