Socio-demographic factors affecting condom use among men in Kanchanaburi dss
Abstract:
Globally, condoms are an important method of preventing pregnancy and
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), especially HIV/AIDS. This study aims to
describe condom usage among men in the Kanchanaburi Demographic Surveillance
Survey (KDSS) and to assess the relationship between current use of condoms and
socio-demographic factors, while controlling for ethnicity and place of residence. The
analysis was based on 10,813 men aged 15-59 years and derived from the 5th round of
the Kanchanaburi DSS, conducted in 2004 by the Institute for Population and Social
Research, Mahidol University.
The analyses employed in this study were: (1) univariate analysis to describe
the general characteristics of respondents; (2) chi-square test used in bivariate analysis
to examine the relationship between independent variables and current use of
condoms; and,(3) logistic regression analysis to estimate the effect of sociodemographic
factors on current use of condoms while controlling for ethnic group and
place of residence.
It was found that 28 percent of men had used condoms at least once, and 12
percent had used them in the past 12 months. Bivariate analysis showed that low use
of condoms was significantly related to older age, lower education, being married,
working in the agricultural sector, being non-Thai, and living in four strata (rice,
plantation, upland and mixed economy areas). The percentage of men using condoms
with their spouse or regular partner was low. They were mainly used for preventing
pregnancy. Sources of condoms were primarily convenience stores and drug stores.
Logistic regression analysis showed that age, marital status, and education were
predictors of condom use. Therefore, health promotion programmes should also focus
on married couples to promote condom use within marriage. Affordability of
condoms is also an important factor and free condom distribution or a low price
condom programme should be launched to increase condom usage.
