An investigation of language learning strategies employed by mattayom three students : the impact of language and content
Abstract:
The study aimed to explore the use of language learning strategies of Mattayomthree
students at Strisuksa school, Roi-Et province. The samples of this study
consisted of sixty students in the RP and sixty students in the EP selected by purposive
sampling. Questionnaires, think aloud protocols, and in-depth interviews were used as
research tools. The validity was field tested. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability of the
SILL questionnaires was .95. Two high proficiency students and two low proficiency
students in each program were asked to participate in the think aloud protocol and the
in-depth interview. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive
statistics (including frequency distribution, percentage distribution, arithmetic mean,
and standard deviation), and t – test, whereas data for the qualitative tools were
analyzed by categorization and content analysis. The results showed that Mattayom
three students from both the Regular Program and the English Program favoured
metacognitive strategies the most. The least favoured strategies were memory
strategies. The Regular Program students preferred metacognitive strategies the most,
and the least preferred strategies were cognitive strategies. The English Program
students preferred metacognitive strategies the most. The least preferred strategies
were memory strategies. The t-test revealed that there were no significant differences
of strategy use by the two groups of students. However, the descriptive statistics
revealed the English Program students had overall mean scores in the six main
strategies that were higher than those of the Regular Program students
