The effect of breastfeeding-promoting program on successful breastfeeding before discharge in mothers with cesarean section
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental research was designed to study the effect of a
breastfeeding-promoting program on success in breastfeeding before discharge in
mothers with cesarean section. The research approval was granted by the
Committee on Human Rights Related to Human Experimentation of Mahidol
University. Inclusion criteria were used to recruit 60 primigravida, pregnant
women with 36-37 weeks of gestation who had been diagnosed for cesarean
section at Bangkok Christian Hospital. They were divided into 30 cases in the
control group and 30 cases in the experimental group. The control group received
only routine nursing care. The experimental group received routine nursing care
with a breastfeeding-promoting program. The program consisted of dissemination
of knowledge about breastfeeding and health practice after cesarean section,
demonstration and practice, provision of a handbook, and provision of assistance
and support after undergoing a cesarean section. The researcher thoroughly studied
the control group first, then studied the experimental group. Labor and delivery
records, The LATCH breastfeeding charting system tool, and breastfeeding
records were used to collect data. In this experiment, successful breastfeeding was
defined by a Latch Score of 9 or above on a scale of 0-10. Data were analyzed by
t-test and chi-square.
The results revealed that the sample in the experimental group was more
successful in breastfeeding before discharge than those in the control group, at a
statistically significant level (p< .05). The mothers who were in the experimental
group tended to be 14 times more successful in breastfeeding than those in the
control group (95% CI = 3.79-54.72).
The results indicate that the breastfeeding-promoting program is effective
in enhancing breastfeeding success in mothers with cesarean section before
discharge. Further study should be carried out to compare the length of exclusive
breastfeeding between the groups at 1, 3, 6 month of infants age in order to see
whether this success is of a continuing nature.
