Role of stakeholders in community participation on solid waste management of Bangphra municipality, amphoe Sriracha, Chonburi province
Abstract:
The policies of National Economic and Social Development Plans have significantly
transformed many agricultural communities in Thailand into industrial ones. As a result,
Bangphra Municipality located near Laemchabang Industrial Estate has to received an
influx of industrial laborers from all regions of the country. The influx of laborers has
resulted in high solid waste volume and waste problems in Bangphra Municipality and its
vicinity. The concept of efficient solid waste management is to promote community
participation in the waste management problem. Therefore, the objective of this research
was to investigate the process of community participation so as to propose a guideline for
solid waste management.
This research was action research. Field survey, in-depth interview, participatory
observation and stakeholder brainstorming were used to examine the solid waste situation
and propose a guideline for solid waste management.
The results showed that local people participate little in solid waste management due
to lack of awareness and knowledge. In addition, the municipality provided insufficient
budget and had no long term planning. However, the municipality had some collaboration
with other public and non-government organizations such as educational institutes, public
health volunteers, Women’s Group of Seafood Processing, and the Provincial
Administration Organization of Chonburi, which has a role in solid waste management for
Bangphra Municipality.
Therefore, the suggestions on solid waste management guidelines for Bangphra
Municipality are to raise environmental awareness, promote waste separation in
households, improve route and schedule planning of waste collections, make use of solid
wastes such as by composting, establish a waste recycling bank, and assign regulations on
waste management for efficient waste management.
