Comparative study of water quality observed from shallow walls in the nearby area of a waste disposal site, Kamphaengsaen, Nakhonpathom province, Thailand
Abstract:
This study was experiment and survey research, which aimed to describe water
quality of a modified area around the Kamphaengsaen disposal site, Nakhonpathom
Province, Thailand. The purpose was to detect the leachate from the disposal site and
water quality of 32 wells situated in the radius 0.5,1.0 km. around the disposal site.
Two steps of sampling collection were made. The first step was purposive sampling
from the whole study area, while the second step was simple random sampling from
32 examined wells. The study was conducted during August-September 2006
Characteristics of leachate were averaged as follows: pH 7.20±0.05, TDS
7,216±719.69 mg/l, BOD5 790.67±68.47 mg/l, COD 1,059.33±224.15 mg/l, Fe
0.00053±0.00025 mg/l, Mn 0.0046±0.00075 mg/l, Cd 0.0047±0.00085 mg/l, Cu
0.0022±0.00105 mg/l and Pb 0.0027±0.00161 mg/l. Water quality of shallow wells
around the disposal site in the radius of 0.5, 1 and >1 km. were found to be in the
following range: pH 6.42-7.71, conductivity 1,267-5,171.5 μs/cm, turbidity 1.80-
12.50 NTU, SS 1-37.5 mg/l, Hardness 103.33-242 mg/l as CaCO3, BOD5 0.97-4.84
mg/l, COD 7.10-11.20 mg/l, chloride 93.33-314.5 mg/l, sulphate 1.20-6.23 mg/l, total
phosphate 0.02-0.14 mg/l and ammonia Nitrogen 0.010-0.057 mg/l as N.
The results indicate variation of water quality in shallow wells of the observed
groundwater in a radius up to 1 km. There was no evidence of groundwater
consumption and usage by communities around the sites. Although quality of
observed groundwater was still not below the surface water standard level III, the
relevant agencies should find a corrective solution for the problem.
