An application of the protection motivation theory with social support to promote Malaria prevantion behaviors among high risk groups in Klonghad district, Sakaeo province
Abstract:
Malaria has been a serious health problem of Thailand for more than 20 years,
especially along the border of the country. The objective of this quasi-experimental
research was to assess the effectiveness of a health education program in which
Protection Motivation Theory and social support were applied to promote malaria
prevention behaviors among high risk groups in Klonghad district, Sakeo province. A
selected village with 52 high risk family members was assigned into the experimental
group and a nearby village with 51 family members was assigned into the comparison
group. The experimental samples were asked to participate in the health education
program for 12 weeks. The program activities comprised of providing malaria
information, brainstorming, modeling, group discussion, demonstration, and practices.
A workshop was designed for village health volunteers and community leaders to plan
for providing assistance and social support to the experimental samples, and
conducting environmental improvement campaign for the village. Data were
collected three times, before experiment, after experiment, and follow up period
through interview.
The results of this study showed that after intervention, the experimental group
had significantly better average scores on perceived severity, vulnerability, selfefficacy,
response efficacy and behavioral practices on malaria prevention and control
than the comparison group and better scores than before the experiment. These
significant differences were also found when the data from the follow up period and
from the post-test were compared. It was concluded that this health education
program, that the Protection Motivation Theory and social support were applied, was
effective and can be applied to other areas with numbers of high cases of malaria.
