Performance effectiveness of dental nurse in primary care unit in the North-Eastern part of Thailand
Abstract:
This study was a cross–sectional survey research with the aim of finding out
the relationships between job characteristics, motivation, role stress and performance
effectiveness of dental nurses in primary care units in the northeastern part of Thailand.
Dental nurses who were working in primary care units were taken as the study samples.
Data were collected by using questionnaires. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was
applied to test between independent and dependent variables.
Results showed that the dental nurses had high performance effectiveness.
Most of them understood about helping others. Dental nurses had to do their work by
various means, which differed from old ways. They should not do too much work because
they had stress caused by ‘Role conflict between internal standard.’ They needed
motivation on ‘Self actualization’ the most because they wanted to exploit their abilities
and skills to the full potential. Most of their job characteristics were concerned with
‘Dealing with others’ because their work was about giving service and dealing with
community. However, ‘Motivating Potential’ was at a low level. This then negatively
affected the quality of work, work satisfaction and performance effectiveness.
The analysis showed that there was no relationship between job characteristics
and performance effectiveness as performing dental task needed ‘Dealing with others’
and ‘Task significance.’ There was a positive relationship between motivation and
performance effectiveness at a low level. It was found that performance effectiveness
depended upon ‘Belongingness, Affiliation, Acceptance (Social Needs)’ and ‘Self
Actualization.’
Role stress was not related to performance effectiveness; however, when the
dental nurse had more stress caused by role conflict—internal standard, several roles and
their performance effectiveness was reduced.
From the research result, it is necessary to help construct networks of dental
tasks and other public health tasks in obvious forms, for some feedback from agents.
Work allocation should be precisely arranged and professional skill should be determined
responsibility. Security and safety, professional advancement and participating in
planning for acceptance from others should be promoted. Lastly, recruiting dental nurses
with proper characteristics in primary care units in the northeastern part of Thailand is
crucial as well.
