Participatory action research for network development of orphans due to AIDS
Abstract:
The purpose of this participatory action research was to investigate the
process and develop network of orphans due to AIDS in Rayong province. The
steps in development of the network of orphans due to AIDS were divided into 5
steps:
Step I: Partnership development; Step II: Vertical network development of
the officers with a responsibility for the orphans, Step III: Horizontal network
development of the orphans and care givers, Step IV: Integrated vertical and
horizontal network to be full model network of the orphans, Step V: Monitoring and
evaluation. The process of the network and projects development were done by
using the PAR, AIC technique, and integrating the achieved activities that were
designed from experiential learning by facilitators who are members of a vertical
network.
Results revealed that this research could effectively develop the orphans’
due to AIDS network that linked people from difference levels, disciplines,
organizations and background, especially the orphans who would not otherwise
have an opportunity to interact because of stigma and discrimination caused by
HIV/AIDS. From the monitoring and evaluation, it was revealed that this network
was successful in implementing network projects for orphans and children affected
by HIV/AIDS in accessing the needed resources such as, economic support,
psychosocial support, expertise and knowledge support for life skills development
in prevention of HIV/AIDS and some problem solving, that would continue to
improve their quality of life in the future.
These findings suggest that the development of this network of the orphans
brought together funding and technical cooperation agencies and those in need of
resources and support, and also empowered orphans to be in self-help groups and
disclosed them to work for the network in escalating the quality of life. Therefore,
the program should be promoted to be rendered in the epidemic area of HIV/AIDS
as tools for improving the quality of life of the orphans.
