Abstract: The purpose of this research was to analyze and synthesize general characteristics of the findings of 78 of Master of Arts Programs in Translation studies in the area of English-Thai and Thai- English translation published from 2541-2546 B.E. from Mahidol University, Ramkhamhaeng University, and Chulalongkorn University. A summary form was utilized as the research instrument. Content analysis and percentage statistics were employed for data analysis. The findings were: Mahidol University carried out the highest number of works. Most of the translation studies were completed in 2544 B.E. and 2545 B.E. With respect to the type of the research, the number of theses was higher than the number of thematic papers. It was obvious that each institution concentrated on different types of research. Regarding source language-target language, almost all of this translation research involved English-Thai translation. In addition, fiction was the text type used for analysis in the majority of these translation studies. This research in translation was able to be classified into five major categories according to the research objectives: 1) Research into the translation process; 2) Research into translation techniques; 3) Research comparing translation techniques; 4) Research into terminology; and 5) Research into translation assessment. The investigation of translation problems in both English-Thai and Thai-English translation was treated in two parts: linguistic problems and cultural problems. In terms of linguistic problems, this subject was analyzed on two levels: the lexical level and the syntactic level. The differences arising from culture were categorized into four groups according to Nida’ s theory of the four levels of cultural problems as follows: ecological culture, material culture, social culture and religious culture. It was found that a variety of translation techniques were applied to cope with linguistic and cultural difficulties, including: addition, deletion, substitution, literal translation, transliteration, interpretation and footnote explanation. The translators often adopted more than one technique at a time depending on problems and appropriateness in order to establish a translation most equivalent to the original message.

Abstract: การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อสังเคราะห์ข้อความรู้ในงานวิจัยด้านการแปลทั้งที่เป็นวิทยานิพนธ์และ สารนิพนธ์ระดับมหาบัณฑิตที่ศึกษาการแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยและจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ระหว่างปีพุทธศักราช 2541-2546 ของมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล มหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหง และจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย จำนวน 78 เรื่อง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือ แบบสรุปสาระสำคัญของงานวิจัย (Summary Form) การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้วิธีการสังเคราะห์เชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณลักษณะ จากการวิจัยพบว่า มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดลผลิต ผลงานมากที่สุด (47 เรื่อง) งานวิจัยด้านการแปลพิมพ์เผยแพร่มากที่สุดในปี พ.ศ. 2544 และ 2545 ตามลำดับ วิทยานิพนธ์มีจำนวนมากกว่าสารนิพนธ์และข้อมูลส่วนนี้ชี้ให้เห็นว่ามหาวิทยาลัยแต่ละแห่งเน้นหนักการทำวิจัย แตกต่างกันไป สำหรับการศึกษาวิเคราะห์การแปลนั้นจะมุ่งศึกษาการแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยมากกว่า การแปลจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเห็นได้ชัด นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าประเภทตัวบทที่นำมาศึกษานั้นเป็น บันเทิงคดีมากที่สุด ผลการสังเคราะห์วิทยานิพนธ์ตามเนื้อหาสาระที่ศึกษา แบ่งออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม ดังนี้ 1) งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับ กระบวนการแปล 2) งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับกลวิธีการแปล 3) งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการเปรียบเทียบกลวิธีการแปล 4) งานวิจัย เกี่ยวกับการทำประมวลศัพท์ และ 5) งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการประเมินงานแปล ส่วนการศึกษาปัญหาด้านการแปลทั้ง จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยและจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษนั้นแบ่งออกได้ 2 ประเภท คือ ปัญหาด้านภาษา และปัญหาด้านวัฒนธรรม สำหรับปัญหาด้านภาษาจะแบ่งการวิเคราะห์ออกเป็น 2 ระดับ ได้แก่ ระดับคำและระดับ ประโยค ส่วนปัญหาด้านวัฒนธรรมยึดการจำแนกกลุ่มตามทฤษฎีของไนดาโดยแบ่งเป็น 4 กลุ่ม คือ 1) วัฒนธรรม ด้านนิเวศวิทยา 2) วัฒนธรรมด้านวัตถุ 3) วัฒนธรรมด้านสังคม และ 4) วัฒนธรรมด้านศาสนา จากการศึกษาพบว่า ผู้แปลใช้กลวิธีการแปลที่หลากหลายเพื่อแก้ปัญหาด้านภาษาและวัฒนธรรม ได้แก่ การเติม การละ การแทนที่ การแปลตรงตัว การทับศัพท์ การตีความ และการใช้เชิงอรรถ นอกจากนี้ผลการศึกษายังชี้ให้เห็นว่าผู้แปลจะใช้ กลวิธีหลายแบบควบคู่กันไปซึ่งขึ้นอยู่กับประเภทปัญหาและความเหมาะสมเพื่อทำให้บทแปลสามารถสื่อความ หมายได้ใกล้เคียงและสมบูรณ์มากที่สุดเมื่อเทียบกับต้นฉบับ
