Factors affecting the team innovation of research and development projects in Thailand
Abstract:
The objectives of this study were to study the level of team innovation of
research and development (R&D) projects, and to study factors affecting the team
innovation of R&D projects. The sample in this study were 312 R&D projects with
677 team leaders and team members. A questionnaire was used to collect data for
quantitative research. Statistical analysis for descriptive statistics using SPSS and
structural equation model (SEM) using LISREL program were used.
The results revealed that the team innovation of R&D projects was at the
rather high level in three aspects including the intentional to doing new things, the
ability of team to generate ideas, and the ability of team to work with generated ideas
to develop new or improved products, technologies, service, or work processes. In
addition, team input factors: team experience and team size as exogenous variables
showed significant direct and indirect effects on the team innovation of R&D
projects. The roles of team leader was a significant variable indirectly affecting team
innovation through team process factors. Moreover, cohesion, clarity of objectives,
communication, task orientation, support for innovation, and participation utility as
endogenous variables directly and significantly affected team innovation. The final
model could explain 69 percent of variance of team innovation. Based on the
finding, the recommendations to the leaders of research organizations and related
persons are that team input factors and team building processes for R&D projects
should be supported. Additionally, team members should develop teamwork skills in
order to promote team innovation of R&D projects
