Local people participation in cultural environment conservation : a case study of Sri Satchnalai, Sukhothai province
Abstract:
This research aims to study the participation of local people in cultural
environment conservation in the area of Sri Satchnalai, Sukhothai province. The
purpose of this research was to study the levels of participation, the factors influencing
participation, and the problems, obstacles and recommendations of the local
participation in cultural environment conservation. The study considered both
quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data was collected by questionnaire.
The target population was 381 households living in Sri Satchnalai district, Sukhothai
province. The data was analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple
Classification Analysis (MCA). In addition, qualitative data was collected by PRA
technique (Participatory Rural Appraisal) and was analyzed by descriptive approach.
The key informants were village headmen, group leaders, and government officers (12
persons). The results of study showed that the majority of local people participated in
cultural environment conservation at a low level.
Factors influencing the participation of local people in cultural environment
conservation with a statistical significance at 0.05 level were age, value appreciation of
cultural environment, knowledge of cultural environment conservation, number visiting
to cultural environment sites. With a statistical significance at 0.01 level were gender
and living duration and at 0.001 level were getting information about cultural
environment conservation, utilization of cultural environment and social status. The
problems and obstacles to local participation in cultural environment conservation were
lack of knowledge and understanding, lack of budget, lack of interest and enthusiasm,
lack of opportunity to participate, and local conflict. This research showed that local
people want to participate more in cultural environment conservation, and equally with
the government. They should encourage further cooperation in training , self awareness
and public relations programs to local participants.
