Abstract:
This study is survey-based research which aims to examine the perceptions
and expectations of subordinates toward the leadership behaviors of the comprised
commander of the Economic and Technological Crime Suppression Division ; to
compare the perceptions and the expectations ; and to investigate the relationship
between leadership behaviors and personal factors of subordinates. The study group
292 police officers in the Economic and Technological Crime Suppression Division,
and the LBDQ (Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire) was used as a tool
for data collection. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS for Windows to
calculate frequency, percentage, maximum value, minimum value, mean, standard
deviation, t-test and F-test.
The results reveal that when analyzed under the framework of the Ohio State
University, the initiating structure leadership behaviors based on perceptions are at
low level, but at high level based on expectations. Similarly, leadership behaviors
based on perceptions are at low level, but at high level based on expectations. It can
be concluded that the leadership behaviors based on expectations are at a higher level
compared to those based on perceptions. The results also show that personal factors
in terms of educational level, rank of police officer and relationship in work are all
related to leadership behaviors.
The suggestion provided by this study is that the commander of Economic and
Technological Crime Suppression Division enhance the roles in both initiating
structure and consideration leadership behaviors in order to gain more acceptances
from subordinates. For further research, it is recommended that qualitative research
be conducted, and the study of leadership behaviors of other supervisors in the
Economic and Technological Crime Suppression Division be undertaken in order to
gain more insightful information.
