Community thinking toward dengue hemorrhagic fever prevention : a case study in Ratchaburi
Abstract:
This qualitative research was aimed at studying (1) community thinking toward
dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) prevention and (2) the perspectives of the community
to mosquitoes and their breeding sites, disease and DHF prevention. The study was
conducted in a community of Ratchaburi province Thailand. Data was collected from
June 2004 to April 2005 by using in-depth interviews, structured observation and
focus-group interviews. Content analysis was used to evaluate the data.
Results showed that community thinking toward DHF prevention was
constructed from biomedical concepts derived from interactions between public health
personnel, physicians, and people in the community. It manifested in specific symbols
(mosquitoes and fever in children) relating to experience and the meaning of DHF
according to the community thinking. The thinking can be divided into two patterns:
(1) contingency thinking (noise, bites and itching) and (2) thinking to eliminate the
cause of disease (dirt and disease).
It is recommended that DHF prevention should be the responsibility of
community individuals without any encouragement or leading by health personnel
