Factors related to situation awareness and crisis management in a viation
Abstract:
There are 5 factors in this research on situation awareness and crisis management in
aviation: attention management, information management, cognitive efficiency, automaticity
efficiency, and inter-personal dynamics. Situation awareness, was divided into 3 levels: level 1
(perception), level 2 (comprehension), and level 3 (projection). Crisis management was
divided in 2 types: rule-based behavior and knowledge-based behavior. The objective of this
research was to develop a causal model of crisis management by using concepts of situation
awareness and factors related to situation awareness. The population was composed of 51
pilot students (who were practicing in a flight simulator in 2004) of Thai Airways.
Questionnaires were used to collect data for qualitative research. Statistical analysis for
descriptive and structural equation model was done with SPSS/PC and LISREL program. The
results were as follow:
The proposed model completely fitted the empirical data (chi-square = 13.72, df = 11,
p = 0.25,NFI=0.87,GFI=0.95,AGFI = 0.77,RMSEA = 0.046). Cognitive efficiency and
attention management had a relationship to perception (SA level1). Information management
had a relationship to comprehension (SA level2). Automaticity efficiency had a relationship
to projection (SA level3). Projection and perception had statisticals significant relationships at
.05 to rule-based and knowledge based behavior respectively.
The recommendations based on this finding are: 1) Cognitive efficiency and attention
management are factors in improving perception. Information management is possible factor
in improving comprehension. Automaticity efficiency is a possible factor in improving
projection. So, improving crisis management could improve situation awareness.; 2) The
paper test of crisis management should be added to the pilot students’ test and combined
objective and subjective report for supporting their grading by evaluators; 3) An incident
forum should be created to share experience among the pilots for good decision making in
crises.; 4) The content of five factors in this study should be added to the pilot lesson plan for
enhancing crisis management.; 5) Inter-personal dynamics factor should be improved for
good team work
